Coconut Development Programme: Water Management and Climate Resilience Technologies for Coconut Plantations

Conceptual Framework Coconut, revered as Kalpavriksha (the tree of life), is one of the most significant plantation crops in Coimbatore District, the largest coconut-producing district in Tamil Nadu. However, climate uncertainties, rising input costs, and limited market security have made traditional agriculture unsustainable for many small and marginal farmers. Recognizing this challenge, Marico Ltd., a leading FMCG company with a strong CSR focus, partnered with COODU in 2018 to launch the Coconut Development Programme under its CSR initiative. Water Stewardship Programme: Climate Smart Agriculture & Demand Management Initiatives

Project Overview Since 2016, COODU has been implementing Water Stewardship Programme: Climate Smart Agriculture & Demand Management Initiatives in the Upper Bhavani River Basin (Karamadai Block, Coimbatore District) with the support of ITC Ltd. – Mission Sunehra Kal (MSK). The programme spans 24 micro-watersheds across 7 Village Panchayats, focusing on: Climate-resilient agriculture,Sustainable water management,Ecological restoration, andCommunity empowerment. A notable highlight is the shared ownership model, where farmers contributed ₹1.19 crore (from individual and common works) out of the total ₹13.70 crore project cost, ensuring sustainability and local accountability.
