A successful multi-year partnership with L&T PES, Coimbatore, fostering water security and biodiversity.

Introduction

Nestled in the Madukkarai Block of Coimbatore District, the Malumichampatti watershed area has long grappled with water scarcity. Despite seasonal rains, the terrain and soil conditions prevented long-term water retention, leading to parched summers, declining agricultural yields, and challenging livelihoods for local farmers.

In 2021, COODU partnered with L&T PES, Coimbatore, to launch a comprehensive, multi-year project: "Conservation and Restoration of Water Bodies and Bio-diversity Promotion." This initiative aimed to reverse ecological degradation, enhance water security, and build a resilient, self-sufficient community. Through strategic engineering, community mobilization, and environmental restoration, we have collectively ushered in a new era of sustainability for Malumichampatti.

Our Holistic Approach

The project was designed to create a lasting impact through a blend of structural interventions and community capacity building:

  1. Structural Rejuvenation: Desilting water channels, renovating and constructing check dams, and creating new water harvesting structures to capture every drop of rainfall.
  2. Ecological Restoration: Large-scale plantation drives with native species to combat soil erosion, enhance biodiversity, and improve the micro-climate.
  3. Community Institution Building: Forming Water User Groups (WUGs) and a Farmers' Trust to ensure equitable water distribution, sustainable management, and long-term maintenance of the assets.
  4. Scientific Foundation: Conducting extensive soil and water testing to guide agricultural practices and measure the project's impact on groundwater levels.

A Journey of Impact: Year-on-Year Progress

Phase 1: Foundation & Launch (2021-2022)

The project commenced with a detailed baseline survey to understand the challenges and opportunities. Our initial focus was on establishing governance structures and initiating critical desilting work.

  • Key Achievements:

Ø  Formation of 3 Water User Groups (WUGs) for participatory water management.

Ø  20,400 CuM of silt removed from water channels and percolation tanks, significantly increasing their storage capacity.

Ø  Renovation of 2 check dams and construction of 1 new check dam.

Ø  Soil health cards distributed to farmers with personalized crop recommendations.

Ø  Launch of plantation drives with community protection committees.

Phase 2: Expansion & Deepening Impact (2022-2023)

Building on the first year's success, we scaled up operations, focusing on larger desilting projects and formalizing community ownership.

  • Key Achievements:

Ø  Massive desilting of 39,474 CuM across key locations.

Ø  Construction of 1 new and renovation of 3 existing check dams.

Ø  Plantation of 4,000+ saplings of diverse native species on community lands and school campuses.

Ø  Landmark Achievement: Formation and registration of the "Vivekananda Thannarva Amaippu" (Farmers' Trust), empowering the community to manage resources and seek subsidies independently.

Ø  A formal handover of all created assets to the Gram Panchayat.

Phase 3: Consolidation & Sustainable Management (2023-2024)

The focus shifted to maximizing water recharge, ensuring sustainability, and integrating advanced practices.

  • Key Achievements:

Ø  A monumental 56,320 CuM of desilting completed, drastically improving water flow and storage.

Ø  Renovation of the major check dam at the "Big Tank" (Periya Kuttai).

Ø  Introduction of Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) structures and Trench Cum Bunds (TCB) on farmlands to directly recharge groundwater.

Ø  Continued plantation and ecological efforts.

Phase 4: A Model for the Future (2024-2025)

The final phase leverages the restored water infrastructure to directly benefit individual farmers and ensure long-term water and food security.

  • Key Interventions:

Ø  Construction of Loose Boulder Check Dams (LBCD) and recharge units for abandoned wells.

Ø  Implementation of Trench Cum Bunds (TCB) on 50 hectares of farmland.

Ø  Large-scale Palmyra seed plantation on tank bunds for erosion control and economic benefit.

Ø  L&T Employee Volunteering: Active participation from L&T staff in plantation drives, strengthening the bond between the community and the corporate partner.

Tangible Results: The Change on Ground

The most compelling evidence of our success comes from the community and the data:

  • Rising Water Table: Rigorous monitoring of 7 wells showed an average rise of 7 feet in the groundwater level, ensuring water security for drinking and irrigation.
  • Agricultural Revival: Farmers report a transformation from drought and despair to abundance. The reliable water supply has saved orchards, enabled the planting of new trees, and supported increased livestock and milk production.
  • Enhanced Soil Health: Regular testing and recommendations have led to more informed farming, reducing input costs and improving yields.
  • Thriving Biodiversity: Thousands of planted trees are now restoring the local ecosystem, preventing erosion, and providing cleaner air.

Voices from the Community

"The school ground was unsafe, filled with bushes and snakes. COODU cleaned it and planted trees with our students, who now care for them. Our campus is now safer, healthier, and beautiful."
- Mr. M. Shakthivel, Teacher, Govt. School, Avvai Nagar

"I was about to sell my land as my coconut trees had dried up. Thanks to the desilting and water recharge, my well is full, my trees are saved, and I have planted new ones. This project gave me back my livelihood."
- Mr. Manikandan, Local Farmer

"Forming a Farmers' Trust was a dream for 7 years. L&T and COODU made it a reality. This Trust will now safeguard our water and secure our future."
- Mr. T. Kumaravel, Founding Member, Vivekananda Thannarva Amaippu

"The Panchayat could never have funded such large-scale desilting. This work has solved our water problems and given farmers new hope."
- Mr. Sathish Kumar, Vice President, Malumichampatti Panchayat

Conclusion & The Way Forward

The Malumichampatti project stands as a testament to what can be achieved when corporate social responsibility, NGO implementation expertise, and active community participation converge with a shared vision.

The infrastructure we built—the desilted tanks, the check dams, the recharge units—are now assets owned and managed by the community. The thriving trees are a legacy for future generations. Most importantly, the knowledge and institutions built, like the vibrant Farmers' Trust, ensure that the community is empowered to sustain and build upon these gains long after the project's completion.

COODU extends its deepest gratitude to L&T PES, Coimbatore for their unwavering support and partnership. Together, we have not just conserved water; we have nurtured life, prosperity, and sustainable future for Malumichampatti.

This project is a replicable model of successful watershed development, and we are committed to scaling this impact across more regions in need.
