COODU has been a trusted implementing partner of the Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society (TANSACS), spearheading community-based HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and support initiatives in Coimbatore district. Our partnership is focused on addressing the needs of high-risk and vulnerable populations while strengthening community resilience against the epidemic.

Targeted Intervention (TI) Program

Through the TI program, COODU reaches Most-at-Risk Populations (MARPs) including:

  • Female Sex Workers (FSWs)
  • Men who have Sex with Men (MSM)
  • Transgender communities (TG)
  • Injecting Drug Users (IDUs)

Key Interventions:

  • Prevention & Awareness: Conducting peer-led outreach, community education, and behavior change communication to promote safe practices.
  • Health Services Access: Linkages to STI clinics, ICTCs (Integrated Counselling and Testing Centres), and ART (Anti-Retroviral Therapy) services.
  • Care & Support: Psychosocial counselling, adherence support for PLHIV, and referrals to welfare and rehabilitation schemes.
  • Capacity Building: Training peer educators and outreach workers drawn from the community for effective program delivery.
  • Monitoring & Evaluation: Robust data collection and reporting to ensure accountability and continuous improvement.

Link Worker Scheme (LWS)

COODU also implements the Link Worker Scheme (LWS) under TANSACS, which focuses on HIV prevention, care, and support in rural and hard-to-reach areas.

Core Activities:

  • Identifying and working with vulnerable populations in rural communities.
  • Creating awareness about HIV prevention, stigma reduction, and gender-based issues.
  • Facilitating referrals to testing, treatment, and social protection services.
  • Mobilizing local institutions, youth groups, and women’s self-help groups to strengthen community-based support systems.

Impact of Partnership

  • Thousands of FSWs, MSM, TGs, and IDUs reached every year with awareness, prevention, and support services.
  • Increased uptake of HIV testing, STI treatment, and ART adherence support across urban and rural areas.
  • Stronger community networks and peer-led systems ensuring sustainability of HIV/AIDS interventions.
  • Empowerment of marginalized groups through access to health, rights, and social welfare schemes.

COODU’s collaboration with TANSACS through both the Targeted Intervention Program and the Link Worker Scheme demonstrates the power of government–NGO partnerships in achieving measurable impact. Together, we are working towards an AIDS-free Tamil Nadu, where vulnerable and marginalized communities have access to health, dignity, and equal opportunities.
