Environment: Sustaining Nature, Securing Futures

COODU has been at the forefront of promoting environmental sustainability and ecological balance through its integrated community-based interventions. Recognizing that environmental well-being is the foundation of sustainable livelihoods, COODU has implemented a wide range of initiatives aimed at conserving natural resources, mitigating climate change, and enhancing environmental awareness among rural and urban communities.

Watershed Development and Water Conservation

COODU has developed 311 micro-watersheds across five districts of Tamil Nadu, covering over 142,000 hectares, rejuvenating degraded lands, and restoring water bodies. Through the construction and renovation of percolation tanks, check dams, farm ponds, and recharge wells, COODU has created water storage capacities exceeding 3 billion litres, directly benefiting farmers and improving groundwater availability.

Afforestation and Biodiversity Conservation

To combat deforestation and promote biodiversity, COODU has initiated large-scale afforestation programs, planting more than 4.5 lakh saplings, 2.4 lakh palm seeds, and 2.25 lakh seed balls across rural landscapes, schools, and community lands. These efforts not only enhance green cover but also restore ecological stability and reduce soil erosion.

Climate-Resilient Agriculture

In partnership with CSR and government agencies, COODU implements Climate Smart Agriculture and Water Stewardship Programmes that promote sustainable farming, organic cultivation, and efficient water use. Farmers are trained on agroforestry, crop diversification, and eco-friendly pest management, building resilience against climate variability and improving soil health.

Environmental Education and Awareness

Through programs supported by the Water Resources Department, TWAD Board (CCDU & Jal Jeevan Mission), and CSR partners like Quinbay Technologies and ITC Ltd., COODU conducts environmental awareness campaigns, school eco-clubs, and community events such as “Water Mela” and plantation drives. These initiatives foster a culture of environmental responsibility among students, farmers, and local institutions.

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Research

As an implementing partner of the Water Resources Department – Environmental Cell Division, COODU has carried out Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) studies for various river basins and irrigation systems. The organization also facilitates training for Water Users Associations (WUAs) under the Participatory Irrigation Management (PIM) framework, emphasizing responsible water use and sustainable irrigation practices.

Urban and Rural Greening Initiatives

COODU’s urban environment programs include plantation and cleanliness drives in collaboration with CSR partners such as Quinbay Technologies, which have led to school greening projects and hostel renovations in Coimbatore district. These initiatives blend environmental conservation with community development.

Impact

  • Over 142,000 hectares of land restored and made productive.
  • More than 3 billion litres of water harvesting capacity created.
  • 4.5 lakh+ saplings planted across Tamil Nadu.
  • Thousands of farmers trained in climate-smart and sustainable practices.
  • Environmental awareness spread through schools, villages, and institutional campaigns.

COODU’s Commitment

COODU continues to integrate environmental protection into every development initiative it undertakes — ensuring that communities not only thrive economically but also live in harmony with nature. The organization’s work exemplifies how grassroots environmental stewardship can create a lasting impact on people and the planet.
