Health: Promoting Well-being and Inclusive Healthcare
COODU (Community Organisation for Oppressed and Depressed Upliftment) has been working steadfastly to ensure equitable access to healthcare and promote holistic well-being among marginalized and vulnerable communities. With a focus on prevention, care, and empowerment, COODU’s health initiatives address critical public health challenges through community participation, awareness generation, and service delivery.
HIV/AIDS Prevention, Care, and Support
As a long-standing partner of the Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society (TANSACS), COODU has implemented multiple health interventions including the Targeted Intervention (Core Composite) Programme and the Link Worker Scheme. These programs focus on Men having Sex with Men (MSM), Transgender (TG), Female Sex Workers (FSWs), and Injecting Drug Users (IDUs) in Coimbatore district.
Through these initiatives, COODU provides HIV testing, counselling, antiretroviral treatment (ART) linkage, and home-based care to People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV). The organization has also extended psychosocial support, nutritional care, and livelihood assistance to poor and abandoned PLHIV, ensuring dignity and inclusion in society.
Health Awareness and Behavioral Change Communication
COODU has conducted extensive health awareness campaigns on HIV/AIDS, communicable diseases, hygiene, reproductive health, and nutrition in rural and tribal areas. These initiatives engage community leaders, youth, and women’s groups to encourage behavioral change and promote preventive healthcare practices.
Support for Children and Vulnerable Groups
Special attention is given to children infected or affected by HIV/AIDS, providing them with educational assistance, nutritional support, and emotional care. COODU’s outreach extends to tribal communities, women, and transgender individuals, ensuring that health interventions reach those most in need.
Sanitation and Hygiene Initiatives
In alignment with the Swachh Bharat Mission, COODU has constructed over 2,300 household toilets and facilitated model clean village programs to promote hygiene and reduce health risks. These interventions are integrated with health awareness campaigns on safe water, personal hygiene, and waste management.
Partnerships and Collaborations
COODU collaborates with TANSACS, District Health Departments, TWAD Board, and CSR partners to implement health-based programs combining awareness, infrastructure, and care. Its community health volunteers act as a vital bridge between public health systems and underserved populations.
