Besides Watershed Development, COODU had, in association with the PWD –
Environmental cell, carried out awareness campaign on eco-friendly practices, solid
waste management, Climate change and water management among officials,
general public, local bodies representatives and farmers in Chennai and Coimbatore
divisions. Environmental fairs / exhibitions / exposure visits were also organised for
local bodies representatives, officials, WUA farmers in various basins, sub basins in
Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Tiruvannamalai and Villupuram districts.
On behalf of NABARD, COODU conducted District Level Water Awareness
Campaign (JALDOOT) among farmers, agricultural labourers, women SHG
members and the general public on the need to conserve water both for irrigation
and drinking in Kalampalayam Panchayat in Coimbatore District in 2017-18. World
Environment Day was celebrated on that occasion.
Every Year from 2017, World Water Day is celebrated namely “WATER
MELA” in Karamadai block of Coimbatore District, on which occasion, experts from
TNAU, KVK share information on water management, best agricultural practices and
cultivation of banana, coconut, tree and fruit crops with the farmers.
Project on Urban Earthquake Vulnerability Reduction (Disaster Management)
has been formulated for Coimbatore Corporation by COODU.
For conservation of Gulf of Mannar Marine Biosphere Reserve, the
Government had formed a Trust and initiated measures to find alternate livelihood
for fishermen living along the gulf who depended on it as livelihood resource with
UNDP funds. COODU campaigned among and motivated fishermen and formulated
micro-plans.
Conservation of Ooty lake was undertaken by COODU in association with
Department of Environment and Forests. COODU organised walkathon, formed
committees, mobilised volunteers, conducted workshops, street plays and a mass
cleaning exercise on channels and the lake.
