Action Sought on Pvt Hotel for Violating Building Norms

Councillors criticised the district administration for not taking action against a private hotel allegedly that is constructing a bridge over the channel by violating norms. It may be noted that the administration organised a workshop on conservation of Ooty Lake for councillors of Udhagamandalam Municipality, on Friday.

At the programme, district Collector P Sankar said, “Ooty lake is a unique tourist spot in the district. Since 2011, ₹7 crore has been spent by the State government for the conservation of the lake.” He also said that stern action would be taken against those who mix untreated sewage water in the lake. “Very soon, a tender worth ₹5 crore would be given to a private firm for reviving the Kodappamund channel, which is considered as the main source of the lake.” However, councilors who were present at the workshop, criticised the administration for not taking any action against a private hotel that is constructing a bridge over the channel. According to rules, there should not be any construction over the channel, they said.

S George, one of the councillors present, told Express, “The administration is conducting the workshop with the help of the NGOs from Coimbatore, instead of contacting local NGOs. It also failed to hold discussions in this regard with leaders of various associations and farmers in the district.” It would be difficult for the administration to take action against the hotel once the construction works are over. In addition, more people will start constructing similar structures in the area, violating norms. This would also pollute the environment, he said.

“When we took up the matter with the district Collector, he asked us to file a petition regarding the issue” George added.
